  • Renee Brown

  • Director

  • Renee Brown is the director of the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (CSLCE). She joined MSU's University Outreach and Engagement in July 2013. Brown was the founding director of the Center for Service Learning and Student Volunteer Programs at the University of Michigan-Flint (UM-F). In her ten-year history with UM-F she was responsible for university outreach, alumni affairs, and corporate and foundation affairs. She served as a director, executive director, and assistant vice chancellor at UM-F. More recently she served as executive director of the Michigan Campus Compact and senior director of civic engagement for the Michigan Nonprofit Association. In those roles, she was responsible for supporting 40 college presidents and campuses across the state of Michigan as well as leading a nation-wide college access and success initiative for national Campus Compact. Her role with the Michigan Nonprofit Association was to facilitate partnerships focused on opportunities for lifelong engagement in Michigan, which included directional oversight of several large-scale national service (AmeriCorps) programs. Brown has presented at several national conferences focused on higher education, collaboration, and nonprofit management. She has a BA and an MA from the University of Michigan. She has served several nonprofit organizations in Michigan as a volunteer and/or board member, notably the Shelter of Flint and the Flint River Corridor Alliance (where she was appointed the first president/chair). She currently serves in a leadership role on the board of the Community Relations Coalition in East Lansing, Michigan.

  • Kelly Malloy

    Kelly Malloy is the office coordinator at the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (CSLCE), which includes managing the America Reads/America Counts programs. Malloy processes student payroll for over 100 student workers and handles issues with students and partner schools as they arise. She also maintains and reconciles bookkeeping records and provides administrative and secretarial support to the director of the CSLCE. Malloy also handles employee searches and assists with event planning for the center.

  • Laurenza Riojas

  • Office Manager and Program Advisor

  • Service-Learning Placements and Database Management

    Laurenza Riojas is the informational and statistical analyst for the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (CSLCE). Riojas manages and maintains informational databases, and collects, prepares, edits and evaluates data for annual reporting and special requests from colleges, departments, deans and directors. She has worked at MSU for over 30 years.

  • Dar Swiler

    Dar Swiler is the secretary for the Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement (CSLCE) where she performs administrative/clerical duties such as answering phones, greeting students and visitors when they come to the center, and creates daily emails to the CSLCE staff. She has been employed with Michigan State University for 8 years and with the CSLCE for 3 years. Before coming to the CSLCE, she worked at the Michigan State University Clinical Center. Swiler attended Lansing Community College, taking business classes in 1983.

  • Tina Houghton

  • Program Advisor

  • Tina Houghton is a program advisor in the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (CSLCE). Tina started her career at MSU in 1995 in the Graduate Studies in Education Overseas program held within the College of Education.  In fall 2000, she accepted a position with the World Association of Infant Mental Health (WAIMH) as a Congress Organizer/Office Manager under Dr. Fitzgerald housed within University Outreach and Engagement.  In 2009, this non-profit moved to Finland and she was offered the position in CSLCE.  In her current position she is charged with developing international community engagement learning programs, introducing international students to community engagement and advises Alternative Spartan Breaks, a Registered Student Organization that send 20+ service trips during academic breaks.  Tina has her Bachelor’s Degree from Northwood University in Business Administration with a minor in International Business and is currently working toward her Masters of Science in Administration degree with a concentration in Leadership from Central Michigan University.

  • K.C. Keyton

  • Program Advisor

  • K. C. Keyton is a program advisor with the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement specializing in the areas of campus-wide days of service, MSU MLK Day committee and planning member, MSU neighborhood engagement, presentations on service and engagement, Spartans Rebuilding Michigan (Advisor), America Reads/Counts, Fill the Bus, and all co-curricular volunteering/community/ student engagement activities within the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement.

  • Derek VanHorn

  • Communications Coordinator

  • Derek VanHorn is the communications coordinator for the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (CSLCE) where he communicates the services, activities and mission of the CSLCE through social media, graphics, photography and marketing. VanHorn has been with the Center since January 2018.

  • Michelle Snitgen

  • Academic Specialist

  • Michelle Snitgen is an academic specialist with the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (CSLCE). In this role she is responsible for developing, supporting, and advancing  academic community-engaged learning at MSU. She also serves as a resource and consultant for faculty and a support for students enrolled in such opportunities.

    Prior to joining the CSLCE in 2018, Michelle served as a program director for the MSU College Advising Corps and held positions as an active communities coordinator with the Michigan Fitness Foundation, a consultant with the State of Michigan King-Chavez-Parks Initiative, and the assistant director of the Michigan Campus Compact. She holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Interpersonal and Public Communications from Central Michigan University. She is an active member of the greater Lansing community as a non-profit organization board member, a volunteer, and a coach.
