Overview

We are very excited to share with our campus and community partners, the inaugural edition of the Michigan State University Community Engaged Learning Index. This report tells the story of community engaged learning at MSU. It is the result of a campus-wide collaborative effort to recognize and celebrate the stories of engagement that are at the heart of the over 26,000 reported student engagements that occur each year. We invite you to reflect on the community engaged learning courses, programs, and projects that contribute to community engagement being a hallmark of the Spartan experience.

The 2014-2016 academic years were an impressive period of time for Michigan State University (MSU) for many reasons, including the significant recognition that MSU received for our ongoing community engaged learning efforts. MSU was awarded recognition with distinction on the President’s Community Service Honor Roll and was named the 2014 Michigan Campus Compact Engaged Campus of the Year.

The information collected by the annual Community Engaged Learning Survey is used to meet the university’s yearly reporting requirements regarding number of students involved in curricular and co-curricular community service and engagement. It also provides important information for university awards and recognition programs, such as the President’s Community Service Honor Roll. Most of all, the report provides a special space for recognizing the outstanding efforts of students, community partners, faculty members and staff members. As you read through the report, we hope you will recognize some familiar faces, reflect on your own efforts, and learn about community engagement across our campus.

Thank you to all who contributed to this special and important report. Completing the annual Community Engaged Learning Survey is essential to ensuring that we tell the complete story for our campus. The survey that generates the information and stories for this report is a link embedded in the Index and may be accessed to add new information and programs at any time leading up to the close of the Spring 2017 semester. Please complete the survey and share your information and stories.

Thank you for helping us prove that Spartans Will. Serve!
